(Self)Portrait
Work by Alayna Kustka
BFF Gallery

Alayna Kustka’s (Self)Portrait explores identity, likeness, and difference through a series of photographs featuring the artist and her twin sister. Developed as part of her final portfolio work at Metropolitan Community College, the project reflects on sameness and individuality through portraiture, surreal composition, and digital manipulation.

Using matching outfits, high diffused lighting, and black-and-white editing, Kustka strips away outside distractions to focus on the visual and emotional relationship between the two subjects. The resulting images move between straightforward portraiture and more uncanny, merged compositions, highlighting how two people can appear deeply similar while remaining entirely distinct.
